Brachyerix macrotis (Rich and Rich 1971; Miocene) was considered a Micoene hedgehog from Western North America.

Erinaceus europaeus (Linneaus 1758; 20-30cm; extant) the common hedgehog, an anagalid close to Ottorcytes. This omnivore can roll itself into a ball, erecting its spines for defence. The tail is short.

Ottoryctes winkleri (Bloch, Secord and Gingerich 2004. UM 7262 middle Wasatchian, Early Eocene, 3.6 cm skull length) is an early shrew tenrec close to Microgale. The posteriorly wide skull lacks cheek arches. The tympanic cavities are enlarged and raised above the jaw joint. Here ithe external bulbous area is restored.

Setifer setosus (von Schreber 1778, Mivart 1871; Madagascar; 18.5cm) is the extant greater hedgehog tenrec. It nests with hedgehogs in the LRT, not with tenrecs, based on skeletal data. Note the digitigrade digits. The molars are premolarized as in archaeocete whales by convergence. Note the lateral incisors erupting deep on the anterior face of the dentary.

Echinops telfairi (Martin 1838; extant, 13-17 cm) the lesser or pygmy hedgehog tenrec is widely considered a tenrec, but here it nests with hedgehogs and other Glires including rodents. This may be a mistake that goes back over 100 years. This omnivore is restricted to Madagascar, home of severalt tenrecs. Apparently, like tenrecs, it has a cloaca, not a separate vagina/anus. Note the large canines, like tenrecs and unlike hedgehogs. Unlike tenrecs, the ears are prominent. Like tenrecs, the jugal is absent.
