Protocaptorhinus pricei (Watson 1954) Artinskian, Early Permian, ~280 mya, ~25 mm skull length, was derived from a sister to Romeria texana and phylogenetically preceded Paracaptorhinus.

Distinct from Romeria texana, The medial premaxillary tooth is not larger than the others. No maxillary teeth are twice as long as wide in lateral view and they are blunt. The frontals are longer, the nasals are shorter. The jugal posterior process is shorter.
