Protocaptorhinus pricei (Watson 1954) Artinskian, Early Permian, ~280 mya, ~25 mm skull length, was derived from a sister to Romeria texana and phylogenetically preceded Paracaptorhinus.
Above: Two distinctly different specimens, both attributed to Protocaptorhinus. Above P. pricei from Texas (Clark and Carroll 1973). Below P. sp. from Rhodesia (Gaffney and McKenna 1979). Phylogenetic scoring employed the holotype from Texas.
Distinct from Romeria texana, The medial premaxillary tooth is not larger than the others. No maxillary teeth are twice as long as wide in lateral view and they are blunt. The frontals are longer, the nasals are shorter. The jugal posterior process is shorter. |
